The Australian Government has introduced a pathway for obtaining permanent residency quickly—the Global Talent Independent Program (GTI). The aim of this program is to attract highly skilled global talent to work and live in Australia, contributing to the nation’s development.
The GTI program focuses on attracting exceptional talent across 10 priority sectors, including:
-Resources
-Agri-food and AgTech
-Energy
-Health industries
-Defence, advanced manufacturing, and space
-Circular economy
-Digital technologies
-Infrastructure and tourism
-Financial services and FinTech
-Education
Whether an applicant can receive an invitation under the GTI program depends on three key factors:
1. Research alignment with one of the 10 target sectors.Current high-demand areas include energy, resources, digital technologies, and health.
2. International recognition of the applicant’s research output. This includes the impact of published papers worldwide, especially those published in high-ranking journals within the last five years where the applicant is the first author.
3. Endorsement from an Australian nominator in the same field. The nominator must be an Australian PR or citizen.
Advantages of the GTI Program
1. No strict requirements on age, English proficiency, work experience, EOI points, or skills assessment, and no occupation list restrictions—making the program widely accessible.
2. Fast processing time, with some applications granted permanent residency in as little as 6–8 months, avoiding lengthy multi-stage visa pathways.
3. Individual-based application, but applicants may include their spouse and children in the same application, saving time and fees.
4. Large number of available places, close to 10,000 each year, reducing competition for quota.
5. Great flexibility for visa holders, who can enter Australia at any time after receiving PR, without specific residency or work requirements.
6. GTI is a “family unit” visa—as long as one family member resides in Australia for 2 years within the 5-year period, the entire family can extend their PR visas together, enabling family reunification and long-term stability.
